As children, we always looked forward with great anticipation to the joy of the holiday season for the gifts we would receive, all the great food we would enjoy and all the time we had to just enjoy life and have fun.
But there are also many people who are alone at this time of year – they could be your coworker or your neighbor – you just never know. And teaching the children in your life about the importance of giving is the best example of holiday spirit you can share this holiday season.
Following are some of our favorite ideas.
Help the helpless. Teach your children the meaning of giving when they give to those who can’t give back. Prepare gift bags for the elderly, the homeless, or for family members who are staying with their children at local hospitals or shelters.
Share sweet treats. Bake some cookies and share them with a neighbor, your mail carrier or anyone you know who may need some Christmas cheer.
Share a warming drink on a cold day. Make some hot chocolate to deliver to people who are working outside or to anyone else who needs to feel the warmth of the season.
Surprise someone! Let your children secretly surprise someone by leaving a small gift at their doorstep or take the gifts with you and give them to the people you encounter during the day.
Think of all the love that could be shared if others paid it forward! Teach the children in your life that presents are fun to give and receive, but the true nature of the season is giving from the heart.
