Porcelain veneers can do amazing things – but just like anything else, they need to be taken care of so that they work as they are supposed to and so they will last for a very long time. Veneers don’t take a lot of special care, but there are a few things you should keep in mind to keep them looking and functioning their best.
Maintaining your veneers
Veneers are made out of porcelain, which is not only tough, durable, and long lasting, but it also provides an aesthetically pleasing way to cover teeth. They are used for a variety of problems, such as stained teeth that are so discolored that they don’t respond to whitening treatments and teeth that are damaged, cracked, or chipped. They can even help to correct teeth that are crooked. But they aren’t invincible.
If you have porcelain veneers, make sure you:
1. Stay away from hard foods, such as hard candy, ice, and fruit pits. You should also avoid chewing on hard objects such as pens – if you bite down on tough objects in just the wrong way, it can damage veneers.
2. Avoid certain foods and drinks. Red wine, coffee, tea, and foods like blueberries and tomato sauce can stain teeth. Smoking and chewing tobacco can also stain teeth. Porcelain veneers are resistant to staining, but you want to make sure that you keep the rest of your teeth looking as good as your veneers do!
3. Keep up with your oral hygiene. This one is always important, whether you have veneers or not! Good oral health habits (brushing twice a day, flossing at least once a day, and visiting your dentist for cleanings or whenever you have a problem) will help to keep your porcelain veneers looking their best for years to come.
Porcelain veneers can do a lot to improve your smile and your oral health – they just need a little care.
